History of our house and the surroundings
The original first dike of the Voisepolder was built in the second half of the 13th, followed by dike repairs in 1639 and 1711.
In the 19th century, against the dike of the Elizabethpolder (a separate part of the Voisepolder) our house was built as a farmer's / workers' house.
The house is already recognizable on a detailed map 1856 -1866 (Grote Historische ProvincieAtlas van Zeeland; republished Wolters Noordhoff 1992)
Around 1550, monks started the reclamation of the Elizabethpolder.
In 1866, the Elisabethpolder was already drawn on an overview drawing in the Breskens area by Kuyper. With a blue arrow I marked the location of the house.
In the period 1800 to 1930, the Hoofdplaatseweg was used by the farmers as an important trade route between the polders in the area Groede / Nieuwvliet and the harbour in Hoofdplaat. Halfway through the ride, the farmer rested in a living room café at Hoofdplaatseweg 7. The horse was given extra care in the barn. In the early 1900s, Sien Loose lived in the house with his 10 children. During and just after the 2nd World War, another family also lived with Sien Loose. Recently (March 2007) we met Mrs. Steyaertrod / Nieuwvliet and the harbour in Hoofdplaat. Halfway through the ride, the farmer rested in a living room café at Hoofdplaatseweg 7. Recently (March 2007) we met Mrs. Steyaert- van Houte and her 3rd daughter, born in 1945. Mrs. Steyaert said that she lived in the left side of the house with her 3 children for several years. She hardly recognized the house anymore because of all the renovations in the later years. The living room was then split by an entire wall, with a staircase to the upper floor. Until the early 50s of the last century, there was a train track Breskens - Maldegem right in front of the house. July 2020, 4 people show up at our door unannounced, one of the people identifies himself as a former resident. Mr. Pierre Béghin has lived here since 1957. As a resident of Brussels, he and his wife thought it was too busy to let the children play in the street. Here they found peace and space. He was proud of the fact that the fireplace he made is still there. In the 70s and 80s of the last century, the previous owners (Kon family) renovated the house considerably, renewed electricity, expanded plumbing, added a dining room with cellar.
Recently (2005) the Breskens ring road was built in the immediate vicinity of the house. This road has been given the name Sterrebosdijk. During excavation work, the ditch behind the plot was deepened again. In the photo, the old layers of marine clay, shell deposits and original seabed are clearly visible
.
The original road over the dike on the side of the house has now been deepened and runs under the ring road via a so-called agricultural tunnel.
In 2012, part of the annex (garage and office) burned down. In 2013 a garden room and bedroom were built by contractor Buize from Nieuwvliet. The new spaces make the house future-proof, among other things due to the ground floor taste of various facilities (access with a wheelchair).
